Review: Convoy C8+ Oak Brown 6500K Portable Flashlight Review

As soon as this torch arrived I stripped open the packaging and fired it up with one of my many trusty 18650 batteries, to say the output is impressive would be an understatement, for its tiny size this thing is incredibly bright.  If you have ever shopped in-store or online online for a torch, you would be forgiven for finding the bold claims of luminosity to be highly dubious.  Not so with the Convoy C8+, rated at 1100lm, On the brightest setting it is difficult to look at a reflection on a dull surface like a wooden floor, this thing is your own portable Sun.

Build quality is solid with no moving parts and the Oak Brown colour is a refreshing change from the standard you can have any colour as long as it is black option.  What I really loved about the build is the glorious Matt Finish, for a Torch this aspect alone makes perfect sense.

Main Features:

  • Unique design and finish
  • Deep diamond knurling, u-shape tail, it is non-slip, waterproof, and abrasion resistance
    Eight lighting modes:
0.1 percent brightness, 1 percent brightness, 10 percent brightness, 35 percent brightness, 100 percent brightness, strobe, biking and battery-check, so many brightness options are convenient for us
  • LED will give you stable and bright light, non-thermal radiation, and is safe and reliable
  • Wide application suitable for camping, fishing, hunting, hiking, searching, working
  • Powered by 1 x 18650 rechargeable battery ( battery is not included )
  • Light source: XPL HI beads
  • Input: 4.2V

I guess I should post the obvious and put a word of warning out for potential buyers especially those with kids, please do not shine this torch directly at someones eyes and keep an eye on the young ones – this is no ordinary Kmart style flashlight.

I took this torch out to the beach for a night time stroll with my youngest and the little Obi Wan Kenobi wannabee would not give it back – it was too much fun as a makeshift lightsabre.  For a bit of a comparison, we also took along my trusty Cree T60, the evidence of which you can find in the pics above.

On the 2 highest brightness settings, It made the Cree look weak in comparison – even at its highest output. In the second comparison picture above, you can still make out the stones on the ground with the light from Cree on the left.  The Conroy on the right completely blows out the image due to the intensity of the light.

A decent torch is one of the best gifts you can buy for the gadget enthusiast but unfortunately your options in Australia are limited to the usual suspects.  The likes of Bunnings and local hardware stores don’t stock items like this at all and even their most expensive items don’t even remotely come close to the Convoy C8+.

Buying online for this type of item is definitely the way to go but you will need some 18650 batteries to go with a Torch like the Convoy C8+.  You can get these also from Gearbest or you can find them on ebay.  For reference, my favourite 18650 brand is probably the Panasonic NCR18650B batteries which have awesome longevity and they work perfectly with the Convoy C8+.
