You have probably scoured the net and read all the positive comments on the e-cig phenomena so are ready to buy an electronic cigarette?
If so, you are in for a treat as switching to this battery powered product is definitely a healthier and cleaner alternative to conventional cigarettes and other forms of tobacco smoking. Personally, switching to e-cigs is one of the best things I have ever done. The latest September 12.5% price increase has also made traditional tobacco product prohibitively expensive so what are you waiting for?
What to buy for a first time e-cig purchase? Updated 5th September 2018
The foundation: A Starter Kit
The days of the Joye 501 starter kit and the Ego kits are long gone, electronic cigs have come a long way in just a few years. Starting gear is hugely important, quite simply your first experience with a ecig kit usually determines whether you make the switch or just forget about it; first impressions are king in this regard.
A great Starting kit: Authentic Eleaf iStick Pico + ELLO Tank Kit
The iStick Pico 21700 is the newest addition to the hugely popular Eleaf iStick Pico family. This kit comes supplied with a 21700 battery and can also be powered by 18650 batteries – if you have ever bought a decent led torch from overseas you may have already encountered these batteries and have them already.
The iStick Pico is capable of running up to 100W and has a maximum of 2A charging for efficient recharging. Included with the iStick Pico 21700 is the ELLO tank, a retractable top fill and extendable tank that introduces a new HW1-C coil. Featuring a ceramic wrapped wick system for heat preservation, this HW1-C coil can provide a great and efficient vaping experience with enhanced taste.

An Alternative version: Eleaf iStick Pico S 100W Mod Kit with Ello Vate Tank Atomizer
The S version jazzes up the look departments and ops for a slightly bigger vaping device. Functionality however remains the same but it is slightly more expensive – ajust a bit more than a pack of 50’s in Australia.
21700 Batteries are still pretty pricey given how new they are so I would recommend getting 2 or 3 extra 18650 batteries to complement your device. At the moment you can get 3 18650 batteries for the price of 1 21700 battery and they will last almost twice as long.
The tank is what holds your e-juice or e-liquid and atomiser, you will need at least 2 to start with. There are many options and capacities but I think the best priced and performing for the above gear is the eleaf branded Ello Mini XL Tank Atomizers with a 5.5ml capacity.
The ELLO mini atomizer features its all-new Hello World (HW) series coils, bringing you ultimate vaping experience with nice flavor. The retractable top fill system makes it really easy to fill the tank. You just need to slide the drip tip back and it reveals the fill port. The dual air inlets allow optimal airflow for great vapor production.
The coils are essentially a disposable heating element that is placed in your tanks, combine a heated element with ejuice and you have the vaping experience. Something like the Eleaf ELLO HW1-C Single-Cylinder Coil Heads are the perfect match and fit for this Ello tank. A 5 pack will cost around $15 and last a month or so depending on how much you vape.
Eleaf added a new member to HW series coils named HW1-C Single-Cylinder 0.25ohm Head. Featuring a ceramic wrapped wick system for heat preservation, this HW1-C coil can provide a great and efficient vaping experience with enhanced taste.
Sometimes referred to as nicotine juice, e-liquid, or vape juice, this part of an electronic cigarette is what makes the whole experience so cost effective compared to traditional cigs. Once your cartridge or tank is empty, simply fill up your tank with some e-juice and away you go. I smoked about 25 medium strength cigs a day, which were about 8mg rated and found that 18mg e-juice was perfect for my needs. Ecigs deliver nicotine differently to your body so using a higher mg strength juice than what you were normally smoking ends up being quite normal. Tests have shown the body receives 5 times as less nicotine than the old tobacco ciggie, though e-cigs produce a quicker hit of nicotine in the short term.
My suggestion is to start with some 12mg to 18mg Nicotine ejuices and grab some of these flavours and whatever takes your fancy:
- RY4 (sweet cig flavour)
- 555 (cig flavor)
- DK-Tab (cig flavour)
- Unflavoured (for mixing)
- Double Mint
They are around $4.50 to $8 for a 20ml bottle and can be found from various overseas suppliers. The brands Dekang (the original) and Liqua are great budget starting juices which stock a vast range of flavours and strengths. You can also buy juices and flavour mixers here in Australia which you can vape as is or you can buy a flavour which you mix with your own unflavoured nicotine juice.
E-juice flavour is a very personal choice and it differs greatly by region. US and Aussie brand tend to flavour there juices more aggressively than the original Chinese variants and often add sweeteners to their products. Uk suppliers are a good middle range I have also found.
You may hate menthol tobacco smokes but mint and menthol ecig flavours are a different kettle of fish and highly recommended for first time vapours and coffee lovers. A Minty vape and coffee is magical – even better than the old traditional cigarette.
In Australia you can now buy e-juice from most tobacco shops though unfortunately these are all nicotine free due to current laws. You can however buy a 3 month supply from overseas vendors.
Before you buy
Whatever you do, don’t rush out and buy an electronic cigarette from just any online store.
Not all e-cigarettes are created equal, there are copies, some good, some bad and new sites are appearing daily offering varying degrees of quality merchandise. Some users have issues ranging from simple mechanical failures like battery lifespans, atomizers that have been produced poorly causing them to either get clogged way too easily or arrive dead on delivery. A dodgy atomizer or tank produces poor vapor quality and lack of volume which could put off a potential tobacco smoking convert – Something I would hate to see happen.
The best way to avoid these problems is to educate yourself on the best models, brands and manufacturers of electronic cigarette products. Recently a vast majority of manufacturers are producing cheaply made inferior products which are blatant copies of the original. The good news is that there are a handful of reputable companies with top of the line e-cig goodness that will give you a realistic smoking experience which WILL help you make the switch.
I personally recommend Health Cabin for purchases requiring nicotine, price and quality is top notch, and if you require non nicotine purchases, Vaper Empire is another local place I frequent for my ecig goods but you shouldn’t have any trouble with any Aussie supplier. For other Quality overseas vendors which sell nicotine based ecig products you could try Heaven Gifts and FastTech.com or any that are in our coupon feed below.
It is illegal In Australia to sell nicotine products, so most reputable local suppliers only sell non nicotine products in regards to their electronic cigarette wares, it is however fine to import nicotine ecig products for personal use from stores like Health Cabin.
